COPD Clinical Trials in Plantation, Florida
Four active studies now enrolling — access breakthrough treatments for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease at no cost
Advanced COPD Treatment Research in South Florida
Living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can be challenging, especially when standard medications are not providing adequate relief. At Lung Research Florida, under the direction of Dr. Frank Hull, we are investigating the next generation of COPD treatments — therapies designed to reduce exacerbations, protect cardiovascular health, and address the specific type of inflammation driving your disease.
Our research center in Plantation, FL is currently enrolling patients in four active COPD clinical trials, each targeting different aspects of COPD through innovative mechanisms. Whether your COPD is driven by eosinophilic inflammation, frequent exacerbations, or cardiovascular risk, there may be a study right for you.
Why Consider a COPD Clinical Trial?
- Access breakthrough treatments 3–5 years before FDA approval
- $0 cost for all study-related medications, tests, and specialist care
- Close monitoring by Dr. Hull and our experienced research team
- Compensation for time and travel in most studies
- Continue your current medications while adding investigational therapy
Our Active COPD Clinical Trials
Each study below targets a different mechanism of COPD. Click through for full eligibility details, or call our research line (954-520-7296 x1) to discuss which study may be the best fit for you.
ENDURA — IL-5 Inhibition for Eosinophilic COPD
Now Enrolling
A precision medicine approach for COPD patients with elevated eosinophils. This study evaluates an IL-5 inhibitor that targets the specific inflammatory cells driving your flare-ups — not a one-size-fits-all treatment, but therapy matched to your biology.
- Ages: 40–80
- Key requirement: Elevated blood eosinophils, frequent exacerbations
- Treatment: Targeted biologic injection
- Duration: 52 weeks with regular monitoring
THESEUS — Dual IL-13/TSLP Nanobody for COPD
Now Enrolling
A revolutionary nanobody therapy that attacks COPD inflammation from two angles simultaneously. By targeting both IL-13 and TSLP pathways with a single molecule, THESEUS offers a dual-action approach for patients with type-2 inflammatory COPD who have not responded adequately to standard inhalers.
- Ages: 40–80
- Key requirement: Moderate to very severe COPD with type-2 inflammation
- Treatment: Novel nanobody (dual-target)
- Duration: 52 weeks
PRESTO — IRAK4 Inhibitor Oral Therapy for COPD
Now Enrolling
A first-in-class oral tablet that targets the IRAK4 inflammatory pathway — a completely new mechanism for treating COPD. By blocking toll-like receptors and IL-1 family signals, this medication addresses the chronic inflammation that drives COPD progression and exacerbations at its source.
- Ages: 40–80
- Key requirement: Moderate to very severe COPD with persistent airway inflammation
- Treatment: Oral tablet (convenient daily dosing)
- Duration: 52 weeks
THARROS — Triple vs Dual Therapy for Heart & Lung Protection
Now Enrolling
Could your inhaler regimen protect your heart as well as your lungs? This landmark study compares triple inhaled therapy versus dual therapy to determine whether adding an inhaled corticosteroid can reduce heart attacks and strokes in COPD patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
- Ages: 40–80
- Key requirement: COPD with cardiovascular risk factors or history
- Treatment: Inhaled triple therapy vs dual therapy
- Duration: Long-term cardiovascular outcomes study
Understanding COPD and Clinical Research
COPD is a progressive lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It affects over 16 million Americans, and many more remain undiagnosed. While current treatments such as bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids can help manage symptoms, they do not address the underlying disease mechanisms for all patients.
Clinical trials represent the cutting edge of COPD treatment development. The therapies being studied at Lung Research Florida target specific inflammatory pathways — such as eosinophilic inflammation, IL-13/TSLP signaling, and IRAK4 innate immune pathways — that drive COPD in different patients. This precision medicine approach means treatment is matched to your specific type of COPD, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Who Should Consider a COPD Clinical Trial?
You may benefit from participating in a COPD clinical trial if:
- Your COPD symptoms are not well controlled despite current medications
- You experience frequent exacerbations (flare-ups) requiring antibiotics, steroids, or hospitalization
- You have been told you have eosinophilic COPD or elevated inflammatory markers
- You have cardiovascular concerns alongside your COPD
- You are interested in new treatment options not yet available to the public
- You want closer medical monitoring from a pulmonary specialist
What to Expect as a COPD Trial Participant
Participating in a clinical trial at Lung Research Florida means receiving a higher level of care than standard treatment alone. Here is what you can typically expect:
- Free eligibility screening — including spirometry, blood work, and a consultation with Dr. Hull's research team
- Regular study visits — typically monthly, with comprehensive lung function testing and health assessments
- Investigational treatment at no cost — all study medications, lab work, and imaging provided free of charge
- Close medical monitoring — expert oversight throughout the study with safety checks at every visit
- Compensation for your time — most studies provide payment for travel and time
You can withdraw from any study at any time, for any reason. Your regular COPD medications typically continue during the study. For more details about the clinical trial process, visit our Clinical Trials FAQ.
Frequently Asked Questions About COPD Trials
Can I continue seeing my regular pulmonologist?
Yes. Clinical trial participation does not replace your current physician. We work alongside your existing care team and provide them with regular updates on your progress during the study.
Will I receive a placebo instead of real treatment?
Some studies include a placebo group as part of their design, but you will continue taking your standard COPD medications regardless. Our research coordinators will explain the specific design of each study before you decide to participate. Several of our studies provide active treatment to all participants.
I have other health conditions besides COPD. Can I still participate?
Many COPD patients have other conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Each study has specific criteria, but having additional health conditions does not automatically disqualify you. In fact, the THARROS study specifically enrolls patients with both COPD and cardiovascular risk factors. Contact us for a personalized eligibility assessment.
How do I get started?
Call our research enrollment line at 954-520-7296 x1 or complete our online eligibility form. A research coordinator will discuss your medical history and help determine which study may be right for you. The initial consultation is free and confidential.
Ready to Explore COPD Clinical Trial Options?
Our research coordinators are available Monday–Friday, 8 AM–6 PM, and Saturdays 9 AM–2 PM. All consultations are free, confidential, and available in English and Spanish.
Clinical trial participation is voluntary. All studies are reviewed and approved by an independent Institutional Review Board (IRB) and follow FDA safety guidelines.
